Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Sight

by Linksfield Optometrist

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that often progresses slowly and painlessly, with no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. By the time you become aware of changes to your sight, irreversible damage has often already occurred. Understanding the impact of glaucoma and prioritising early detection is crucial for preserving your long-term eye health. Read more about why glaucoma is a threat to your vision and the importance of early diagnosis…

Here, we shed some light on the subject…

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is not a single disease but a group of eye conditions that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve. This nerve, which is essential for good vision, transmits visual information from your eye to your brain.

The most common form, open-angle glaucoma, is typically caused by a build-up of fluid in the eye. This increased pressure puts strain on the optic nerve, leading to damage. While high eye pressure is a major risk factor, it’s important to know that glaucoma can also develop in individuals with ‘normal’ eye pressure.

Why is it called ‘The Silent Thief’?

In its early stages, glaucoma causes no pain and no immediate change in vision. The vision loss begins in your peripheral (side) vision, which you may not even notice at first. This is because your brain is very good at ‘filling in’ the missing information. You might not become aware of blind spots until a significant portion of your peripheral vision is gone. In some advanced cases, the condition can lead to tunnel vision and eventually, total blindness.

The crucial role of early diagnosis

Because glaucoma’s effects are gradual and often go unnoticed, early diagnosis is the most effective way to prevent severe vision loss. Once vision is lost due to glaucoma, it cannot be restored. However, if the condition is detected early, it can be successfully managed with treatments like eye drops, laser procedures or surgery. These treatments can halt or slow the progression of the disease, helping you preserve the vision you still have.

Are you at risk?

While anyone can develop glaucoma, some factors increase your risk. These include:

  • Age: The risk increases significantly for individuals over the age of 60.
  • Family History: Glaucoma tends to run in families. If a parent or sibling has it, your risk is much higher.
  • Race: People of African, Caribbean or Asian descent are at a higher risk.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and severe near-sightedness can also be risk factors.

Protecting your vision

The best way to protect your vision from glaucoma is to have regular comprehensive eye exams. A simple eye pressure test is not enough. A thorough exam includes checking your eye pressure, examining your optic nerve and performing a visual field test to detect any early signs of vision loss.
