Contact Lens Care 101

No matter your age or stage of life, wearing and caring for contact lenses requires responsibility and commitment. Here’s a simple ‘how to’ guide for using and taking care of your contact lenses…
Follow these easy steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your contact lenses.
- Use a mirror and a clean, flat surface to insert and remove your contact lenses.
- Start with the same eye each time when inserting or removing your contact lenses.
- Make sure the lens is not inside out before inserting it into your eye.
- Inserting contact lenses:

- i. Place the lens on the tip of your index finger.

- ii. Use your free hand to hold your upper eyelid open.

- iii. Use your other hand to hold your lower eyelid down.

- iv. Look straight ahead and gently place the lens on your eye.

- v. Slowly release your eyelids and blink a few times to help the lens settle into place.

- Taking out contact lenses:

- i. Look up and use your middle finger to gently pull your lower eyelid down.

- ii. Use your index finger to touch the lens and slide it down onto the white part of your eye.

- iii. Pinch the lens gently between your thumb and index finger to remove it from your eye.

“Don’t rush. Take your time and be patient when inserting and removing your lenses to avoid causing discomfort or injuring your eye“
Additional tips
- Avoid rubbing your eyes while wearing contact lenses.
- Follow the recommended wearing schedule for your specific type of contact lenses. Do not wear them longer than recommended.
- Remove your contact lenses before going to bed, taking a nap, or swimming.
- Clean your contact lenses after each use with a recommended cleaning solution.
- Store lenses in a proper lens storage case. Clean the case after each use, and keep it open and dry between cleanings. Use only fresh solution to clean and store contact lenses. Never reuse old solution.
- Replace your contact lenses as recommended by your optometrist.
- Avoid sharing your contact lenses with others.
